Grants from our donor-advised funds are making a significant difference in our community. This winter, the City of Fitchburg Department of Health faced a critical funding gap that threatened the ability to open its Overnight Winter Warming Center—a lifeline for unsheltered individuals seeking refuge during brutally cold nights.
Upon learning of the need, one of our fundholders generously stepped up, providing a grant that ensured the warming center could purchase essential cots and hire the necessary staff. Thanks to this timely support, the center remained open for 30 nights and two full days during winter storms.
Over the course of the season, the Warming Center served 99 individuals. Some guests stayed for a single night, others for as many as 20, and some simply came in to warm up and enjoy a hot cup of coffee. Beyond shelter, the center connected guests with critical resources—two individuals transitioned into permanent housing, and many others accessed detox programs and medical or behavioral healthcare services.
The warming center staff shared a powerful story that highlights the profound impact of this work:
One guest, whom we had supported in the past, was struggling deeply with alcohol addiction. His condition had deteriorated to the point where he was living outdoors and unable to care for himself. Despite these challenges, he was always welcomed with dignity and respect. His hygiene issues meant we had to replace several cots, but one of our dedicated staff members worked with him one-on-one, providing support with self-care, clean clothing, and winter outerwear.
Due to growing concerns for his safety, the Fitchburg District Court issued a Section 35 order, mandating treatment. After two months in recovery, he was discharged and placed in a bed at the Leominster shelter. He is now maintaining sobriety, continues to stay at the shelter, and has expressed deep gratitude to our staff for not giving up on him. He looks healthy, feels hopeful, and has a renewed outlook on life.
This story, and many others like it, are a testament to the power of community generosity. We are deeply grateful to our fundholders for enabling this life-saving work.
