Community Partner Spotlight: Growing Places

We are excited to spotlight a community partner that is helping make fresh, healthy food available to all community members in North Central Massachusetts: Growing Places. The Community Foundation manages an endowed fund for this Leominster-based non-profit and has also supported their work with several grants.

Growing Places’ mission is to inspire and connect North Central Massachusetts residents to create equitable access to healthy food through education, collaboration, and sustainable practices. The organization was created in 2001, when its two founders built five gardens for local low-income residents. Since then, it has built more than 450 gardens and provided technical support to more than 1,500 people in need.

Growing Places fulfills their mission by running a variety of programs, including overseeing community teaching gardens that provide space and education for local gardeners; running educational programs for children focused on healthy eating, gardening, and environmental sustainability; offering garden and cooking workshops; and managing farmers’ markets in Fitchburg and Leominster.

In addition, Growing Places organizes outreach efforts and educational programming for the Leominster implementation of the Greening the Gateways City Program, a state-wide effort to reduce home heating and cooling costs by increasing tree canopy cover.

The Community Foundation first partnered with Growing Places in 2010, when we gave them a grant to build ten households in Clinton with vegetable gardens. We have since provided additional grants to support the creation of teaching gardens and development of youth outreach programs. In 2017, Growing Places established an endowment fund with the Community Foundation that will help ensure its continued growth and long-term sustainability.

“The Community Foundation has been thrilled to partner with Growing Places through managing their endowment fund and supporting them through grants for their many amazing programs,” says Linda Mack, Vice President of Development and Donor Services at the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts. “To teach people the skill of how to grow their own food is so empowering to the North Central Massachusetts community.”
