Community Foundation funding provides hot meals to displaced families

The Spanish American Center is preparing over 100 hot meals twice a week for displaced families living in local hotels thanks to funding provided by the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts.

Because of the lack of emergency housing, homeless families are being placed in local hotels by the state until suitable housing can be found.  According to Phil Grzewinski, president of the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts, the families, many with small children, are living in a hotel room with only access to a microwave, so the goal is to provide a regular hot meal.

Since last year, the staff and volunteers from the Spanish American Center having been preparing the meals at a local church and delivering them to the hotel. “The families really look forward to a hot meal, since they are already struggling with their living conditions,” said Neddy Latimer, executive director of the Spanish American Center.

The $55,000 in funding to purchase the food comes from the Community Foundation’s Critical Needs Fund, which is designed to provide support for basic needs such as food and shelter.
