Nashoba Community Health Care Fund Awards Grants to Improve the Health of Local Communities

Ayer, MA (March 9, 2010) – The Nashoba Valley Community Healthcare Fund recently awarded $118,972 in grants to help improve the health of residents in 13 communities in the region.

“We are pleased to make these grants, which will improve the well-being of children, adults and seniors in the Nashoba Valley,” noted Phil Grzewinski, president of the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts, which awarded the grants in partnership with the Greater Lowell Foundation.

Nashoba Associated Boards of Health received a $36,303 grant to develop a standard to identify at-risk residents and improve access to needed health-care services.

To assist with the increased demand for food, Loaves & Fishes Food Pantry, Inc was awarded $20,000.

Community Healthlink’s Together for Kids program received $20,000 to provide specialized training to early education and care staff on how to respond to young children with challenging behavior.

To improve the survival rate of patients having a sudden cardiac arrest, the Ayer Fire Department will use its $16,910 grant to purchase an automated CPR device.

The American Red Cross of Central Massachusetts received $10,000 to train health-care instructors and provide scholarships to Nashoba Valley residents for certified courses in healthcare.

Awarded $7,000, the Ashby Free Public Library will purchase three automated external defibrillators, to be located in the library, town hall and elementary school.

Cooperative Elder Services, Inc. received $5,059, to provide additional health-care services to low-income, at-risk elders, helping reduce hospitalizations and nursing home placements.

Through a $3,700 grant, Seven Hills Pediatric Center will purchase specialized positioning devices to enhance its therapeutic program, aimed at improving the health of residents in its physical and occupational therapy suite.

The Nashoba Valley Community Healthcare Fund was created in 2006, from the proceeds of the 2003 sale of Deaconess-Nashoba Hospital to Essent Healthcare, creating Nashoba Valley Medical Center.

The fund provides annual distributions to nonprofit organizations, municipalities and other agencies, to advance the community health of residents in thirteen communities originally served by the hospital, including Ashby, Ayer, Bolton, Dunstable, Groton, Harvard, Lancaster, Littleton, Lunenburg, Pepperell, Shirley, Townsend and Westford.

The grantees were selected by the Fund Advisory Committee, which is comprised of local leaders in business, health care and education.
