Responding to Crisis

On September 22, 2019, a 3-Alarm Fire in a condo complex on Beekman Street in Fitchburg left 31 displaced. Community Foundation acted quickly to help those families affected.

In an emergency meeting of its Grants Committee, the Community Foundation of North Central Massachusetts awarded $30,000 to the Salvation Army of Fitchburg to provide immediate financial relief to the victims of the Beekman Street fire. The Foundation’s Grants Committee, chaired by Will Aubuchon, of Aubuchon Hardware, tapped the Community Foundation’s Critical Needs Fund to provide short-term support to people affected by the fire of September 22.

“We wanted to be sure that the families affected by this tragic event had access to the essentials while they work with area agencies to put together longer-term support,” said Aubuchon. “I want to thank my colleagues on the Community Foundation Board for their rapid and thoughtful response to this critical need in our region,” he said.

The Community Foundation grant allowed the Salvation Army to provide affected families up to $500 per person to allow them to address the immediate needs created by the unexpected loss of their homes and possessions from the fire.
