Community Foundation Helps Launch North Central Massachusetts’ Early Literacy Innovation Zone

The Early Literacy Innovation Zone will be a model for how private and public collaboration can help level literacy achievement gaps in suburban and rural regions

FITCHBURG, MA, May 24, 2018 – Community Foundation has provided a grant to help establish a regional Early Literacy Innovation Zone that will ensure thousands of area preschoolers, kindergartners, and elementary school students up to grade 3, have access to breakthrough educational software developed by Footsteps2Brilliance.

The Footsteps2Brilliance learning platform helps accelerate literacy achievement by combining mobile gaming technology with the latest research in cognitive development. Young learners will be able to access the software, in Spanish or English, on their parents’ mobile phones or tablet devices. Each student’s learning progress can be checked by their parents, guardians, or teachers, and aggregated data can be evaluated to assess the initiative’s overall effectiveness.

In addition to Community Foundation, Early Childhood Literacy Innovation Zone partners include United Way of North Central Massachusetts, FLLAC Educational Collaborative, Fitchburg State University, Footsteps2Brilliance and area cities and towns including Athol-Royalston, Ashby, Ayer-Shirley, Clinton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Leominster, Lunenburg, Narragansett, Pepperell, Townsend (North Middlesex), and Winchendon.
